Comics Debate: Physical or Digital?

You might think a Comics Dude who rarely shuts up about comics prefers physical comics over reading them digitally, I might even SAY as much…

But the truth is that I actually READ more comics digitally (these days) than print editions. Sure, I still get my mitts on as many comics as I can, and consider tangible, distraction-free paper to be my ideal reading experience. But the convenience of having near-unlimited reading material on one device has continued to commanded more and more of my reading attention.

Ironically, the fact that I revere the experience of print comics / books is a part of the reason I so often gravitate to the screen. Hear me out.

The ease and convenience of the screen makes it alluring for ‘impulse reading’, which is something I’m more willing to do in those fading hours (or minutes) before conking out for the night. I just lay down, grab the e-reader and load up the Comixology / Kindle or GlobalCOmix app and the world’s my oyster for a spell (worlds upon worlds, really).

Oftentimes, what I expect will be a few minutes of reading will turn into a full volume or two. But that ease of diving in digitally is the trick. Heck, in these reading experiences, I don’t even have to annoy my wife by keeping a light on. Meanwhile though, I want to be wide awake when my hands are on that precious paper, the books I took the effort to buy at my local comic shop deserve a bit more pomp and circumstance, damn it!

Of course, this is a bit of a conundrum. My literal ‘to-read’ stack gets dangerously tall. Like, a-casual-passerby-might-get-buried-some-day tall. All this danger and space-taken while my digital to-read library remains in constant, but practically invisible, churn. This has its merits…

I was fortunate to major in history in college, and to write my senior thesis on the post-war / reconstruction period (following the Civil War) in South Carolina’s lowcountry region. In this period of study and writing, the real-life story of Robert Small’s captured my attention, as it has for many others. Despite his lauded life’s accomplishments, his is a story that remains criminally under-appreciated. Fortunately for us, this comic, and the collected graphic novel edition, is a wonderful and well-constructed means to deliver the story of Robert Smalls to new generations, and to an expanded audience more generally.

Indeed, the tale of Mr. Robert Smalls is a a true inspiration and embodiment of the fact that creating a more perfect union requires constant vigilance.
